Perhaps you are wondering, or perhaps you know. Just what is a moomin? Well you are in luck readers. I am a bona fide moomin expert. The moomins were created by author Tove Jansson and stem from a series of books originally published in Finland. I was introduced to the moomins when I stumbled across the first book in the series, Finn Family Moomintroll, in my father's childhood home. I quickly decided that these obscure books were a hidden treasure.
The moomins are strangely shaped creatures who inhabit a land called Moominvalley. The main characters, Moominmama, Moominpapa, Snorkmaiden and Moomin, all appear to be a cross between a hippopotamus and a troll. Or possibly a capybara. The Moomin family, along with a number of other transient boarders, live in a blue wooden tower that Moominpapa built himself.
They have lots of wonderful friends including a vagabond, harmonica-playing human named Snufkin and a ditzy kangaroo named Sniff. Moomin and crew spend their days stealing hats from wizards (resulting in their house being turned into a jungle) and traveling to an island inhabited by worms. In a later book their peaceful existence is threatened by a comet. Oh my!
